Blandings by Wodehouse and the BBC

Timothy Spall at Blandings

I bought an omnibus of Blandings books last year and it almost immediately went AWOL and only surfaced when I was getting the house ready for Christmas. By that time the BBC was advertising their Blandings series which started last night, so I didn’t get a chance to read any of the book before viewing it.

I think it was well done though, and even if you just love pigs it was well worth watching just for the lovely big porkers featured in it. Jack even laughed out loud a few times, and that doesn’t happen too often!

Saturday’s Guardian review had an interesting article about Wodehouse and Blandings which you can read here.

  1. I do love the Blandings books – particularly those with Uncle Gally. I don’t know if or when this will make it to American TV – I’ll have to keep an eye out.

    • Lisa,
I think it would go down well in the US so fingers crossed that you can see it sometime. I’ve just started reading Something Fresh and I’m reading The Three Clerks on my kindle – enjoying them both.

  2. The woman looks familiar to me, the pig does not. You’re also introducing me to author with whom I am unfamiliar.. Will try to find O. Douglas used books. Thanks.

    • Lorraine,
The woman is Jennifer Saunders, you might recognise her from Ab Fab. I have to say that O. Douglas books won’t be for everyone, they are very old fashioned and they usually have a character quoting something from the bible, but they do give you a flavour of Scottish life in the early 20th century.

  3. That is the fattest pig I have ever seen. I’d watch it just for that, but Jennifer Saunders and Timothy Spall make it a must-watch, if we are lucky enough to get it here in the U.S. PBS, are you listening????

I loved Jeeves & Wooster with Fry & Laurie which turned me onto Wodehouse. I’ll have to move the Blandings series up on the TBR list until we get it here on this side of the pond.
