Library Book Sale

It must have been more than a year since there was a library book sale in Kirkcaldy so I was really looking forward to last Saturday’s at the Adam Smith Theatre. I could have bought a lot but I find I’m getting quite choosy in my old age. Apart from anything else, I have so many books in my TBR pile, so I’m really trying not to add too many more, but I couldn’t pass up the chance to buy these ones.

Agatha Raisin and Love, Lies and Liquor by M.C. Beaton

Loving and Giving by Molly Keane

The Gravedigger’s Daughter by Joyce Carol Oates

Sleeping Tiger by Rosamund Pilcher

How We Built Britain by David Dimbleby

Josephine – A Life of the Empress by Carolly Erickson

How To Be A Domestic Goddess by Nigella Lawson

AA Leisure Guide to Scotland

Jack didn’t buy anything at all, he did see three which he had just bought online a few weeks ago, Sod’s law of course. The same thing happened to me when we were in the Lake District.

Anyway, that lot should keep me busy for a wee while. Having just read the blurb, I’m now not sure about the Joyce Carol Oates book, has anybody read it?

I think the book I’m most chuffed with is the Dimbleby, How We Built Britain. We both enjoyed watching his TV programme with the same title.

  1. Nice selection! I have 3 Oates books but not that one. All of them are thick like that one too. Molly Keane too! That’s keen! Sorry couldn’t resist

  2. We have How We Built Britain too – after watching the TV programme. It’s a beautiful book, more than the book of the TV series, immensely detailed, and absolutely fascinating – you got a bargain there.

I’ve read The Gravedigger’s Daughter and liked it, but I know it’s been criticised. It’s a dark book, quite violent in parts which I didn’t like and there is one terrifying and vividly described episode full of blood and gore, I think I skim read that. It’s a book of two halves and the second half is lighter in tone than the first. It’s a book that made me think!

    • Margaret,
I know, I didn’t see that Dimbleby book until about 15 minutes into the sale and I couldn’t believe that it hadn’t already been pounced on, it cost me all of 80p and as you say, it’s a beauty.

That’s interesting about The Gravedigger’s Daughter. I was put off by the blurb but I will read it soon as you liked it, but might be skimming parts of it too! Thanks.

  3. A nice selection of books, Katrina! Remember to go to the Booksale at St Andrew’s and St George’s West in George St Edinburgh. It starts on Saturday 11 May and goes on to Friday 17 May. But you probably have it in your diary already!

  4. Nice finds! I love our library sales. I usually get first pick since I go through every thing before we open – a nice perk!
I absolutely abhor Oates. Her books give me the creeps.

    • Anbolyn,
Ooh I’m all intrigued about Oates now!

I can’t quite get over library book sales because they didn’t have them in my day. Believe it or not things were even tighter money-wise in the 70s and early 80s. Hardly any books were bought and they were all just put into reserve stock eventually. Top perk for you though!
