Happy New Year

A happy and healthy 2015 to everyone. I hope it’ll be a good one for us all and certainly less traumatic globally than 2014 was. I’m almost at the stage where I have to avoid watching the news, in fact I have avoided it sometimes!

  1. I find it healthier for me to grab the news via The New York Times online than to have to listen to it on radio or television. Reading it seems to keep me abreast of what’s happening while providing some protective insulation as well.

I feel to be fully healthy I can’t overwhelm myself with the feeling of helplessness over world crises and national political calamities that I can do nothing about.

It is good to hope for a “less hectic” New Year.

    • Judith,
I used to be addicted to 24 hour news on TV, I don’t know what I was afraid of missing. Now though – as you say, the news is so bad and I can’t do anything about it, it can be depressing. I sometimes stick my head in the sand for a while! We buy the Guardian – actual newspaper but by then the news in it tends to be a bit stale, so fast do things move nowadays, I still enjoy flicking through the paper though.

  2. I hear you regarding the news. I used to turn it on when I got home from work in the evenings but I stopped in September and found my evenings were much more peaceful and I wasn’t missing anything. Hear’s hoping 2015 will be better. Happy New Year!

    • Stefanie,
Happy New Year to you too!
The news recently has been so ghastly at times that it would put you right off your dinner, so it’s best avoided for that reason alone!

    • michelle johnson,

I hope you have a happy and successful 2015, especially with your artworks and jewellery. I’m still hoping we can meet up sometime for a walk along Hadrian’s Wall or at your jewellery workshop!

  3. Happy New Year.

I think tune the news out and then panic and think I should have at least some knowledge of what is going on. It’s quite often that some of our young members of staff at work ask questions about the world.

Here is to wherever your reading may take you this year.

    • Jo,
That’s why I’ve almost been addicted to news, feeling that I must keep up with what’s happening elsewhere, but at the moment there seems to be no good news, just misery all over the world and getting worse daily. Oh well, you can’t let it drag you down I suppose and reading is good therapy!

  4. Late New Year’s wishes to you. Interesting comments about reading / watching the news. I avoid most sources of news (papers and TV) and sometimes I miss things. There was a shooting at the university near me in 2014 and we did not know about it until the next day. But I stay more relaxed.

    • tracybham,
Happy New Year to you too. If avoiding news means you are more relaxed then it’s obviously the way to go. I wonder if I would then worry about what might be going on that I don’t know about! But really we are all more or less unable to help the situations in the news, especially things happening in the Middle East. So many people marched against starting all those shenanigans in the first place and that got us nowhere.
