I’m taking part in The Classics Club Spin # 16. I’ve already completed my original Classics Club list, reading 68 classic books since 2012, you can see them here, so I’m beginning to compile another list of 50 books to read, this spin is the perfect time for me to select at least 20 more classics that I would like to read – eventually.
1. The American Senator by Anthony Trollope
2. Nana by Emile Zola
3. The Bride of Lammermoor by Sir Walter Scott
4. Down and Out in Paris and London by George Orwell
5. Kenilworth by Sir Walter Scott
6. The Broken Road by Patrick Leigh Fermor
7. Montaigne
8. Summer Half by Angela Thirkell
9. Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy
10. Les Liaisons Dangereuses by Laclos
11. Freckles by Gene Stratton Porter
12. High Wages by Dorothy Whipple
13. The Disorderly Knight by Dorothy Dunnett
14. One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez
15. Orkneyinga Saga
16. The Children Who Lived in a Barn by Eleanor Graham
17. A Scream in Soho by John G. Brandon
18. The Town in Bloom by Dodie Smith
19. Hungry Hill by Daphne du Maurier
20. The Black Arrow by Robert Louis Stevenson
I’m usually fairly strict about what constitutes a ‘classic’ but this list is a bit more flexible, I’m running out of unread Victorian classics in my house. I intend to read The Disorderly Knight by Dorothy Dunnett soon, so number 13 would be ideal for me. On the other hand, I’m looking forward to reading High Wages by Dorothy Whipple so number 12 would be good too, but I intend reading them all eventually so it doesn’t really matter what turns up in the spin.
I wish you Nana this spin – what a read! What an author! What a woman!
Brona,
On your recommendation I’ll definitely read Nana soon!
Some intriguing titles to me. I wish you One Hundred Years of Solitude.
Silvia Cachia,
My husband enjoyed One Hundred Years of Solitude, so that’s one I’ll be reading sooner rather than later – whatever. Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to comment.
Katrina
Good luck! The Disorderly Knights is my favourite Dunnett novel so I hope you get that one.
Helen,
I have a nice old 1966 hardback of this one and I intend to read it soon, no matter what comes up in the spin!
I too am running out of unread classics, especially those written by women, so though I’m taking a break from the Classics Club, I’m focusing on Persephones and Viragos for awhile.
I did love The Children Who Live in a Barn and High Wages, so I hope you get one of those. I also loved The American Senator. And I am intrigued by A Scream in Soho because I love the covers of the BLCCs (I’ve only read one so far (Thirteen Guests) and it was just okay).
Karen K,
I’ve read quite a lot of those British Crime Classics reprints and I think that roughly 50% of them have been disappointing, the cover definitely being the best thing about them! Having said that – I bought another two secondhand in St Andrews today! Good covers though. I live in hope of them meriting being reprinted.
Any book by Zola is fantastic!
I enjoyed a lot #14, but I highly recommend you look online for a chronology of the family and print it to have with you as you read, as there are so many people in that family with the same name. It can be confusing,. But a great book!
My list is here: https://wordsandpeace.com/2017/11/08/the-classics-club-the-classics-spin-16/
Emma,
I’ve read a few by Zola, Germinal is my favourite so far. Thanks for that information, I’ll probably need it to keep things straight! Thanks for the link to your list too.
