My Garden in Fife

We’ll be leaving soon for our Baltic cities cruise, and wifi on those ships is dismal so I’ll be offline for a fortnight. I was just having a look around the garden today and noting how many plants are just about to come into flower, including several clematis and roses. Remind me never to go on holiday at this time of the year again! The clematis alpina above has been flowering for a few weeks already, this is the best it has ever been.

The acers/Japanese maples are all at different stages of growth.

Golden elder, euphorbia Fireglow and amelanchier are good and colourful in the photo below.

Yet more Fireglow is beside the dwarf apple tree, that apple tree was the only plant that was in this garden when we moved here – unless you count loads of grass as a plant.

The Rosemary below is in bloom and a spirea has become entwined with it, but the spirea will flower much later.

The heathers will have finished flowering by the time I get back so one of my first gardening tasks will be to cut it back.

I’m going to miss pottering about here, but I’m sure I’ll enjoy visiting – Copenhagen, Stockholm, Helsinki, Taillin, Warnemunde, St Petersburg and Aalborg. I think I’ll need another holiday to get over this one coming!

  1. The garden looks beautiful, Katrina; I can understand that it’s a wrench to leave it right now. But what a wonderful itinerary! You will have so much to blog about when you’re back! Happy travels!

  2. It sounds like a great trip, I was thinking the other day that it has been way too long since the last time I visited København.

I haven’t been to Warnemünde and I’m not sure if I’ve been to Aalborg but I can vouch for the other cities being well worth a visit. If you haven’t tried the salt salmiakki licorice yet I recommend doing so in Helsingfors, even though it is very much an acquired taste you can’t really visit Finland without trying it…

    Happy travels!

    • We particularly enjoyed Tallin, found a household shop in the old town selling plain white pure linen bedlinen . It was so incredibly cheap (pillowcases under five quid) I couldn’t quite believe it really was linen so only had a minor splurge. Have been kicking myself ever since that I didn’t buy a whole lot more, because it really is linen and gorgeous to sleep on.

      • Janet,
We really liked Tallinn too although I didn’t find a reasonably priced linen shop, maybe it has closed down now. Sadly it got quite wet towards the end of our visit there, but by then we had seen all of the sights I think.

    • ireadthatinabook,
I dodged the liquorice – all varieties – as it’s really bad for you if you are inclined to have high blood pressure! It’s also incredibly popular in Holland.

  3. Have a wonderful cruise….it sounds lovely! With gardens, it’s never a good time to be gone. At least that’s been our experience.

  4. Your garden looks lovely – it’s a shame you have to leave it, but I’m sure the cruise will be wonderful. I would love to visit all of those places. Have a great time!

  5. Katrina,
The clematis is resplendent–how glorious, and how much I loved gazing at each photo you included in this post. Thank you so much!
And you are going to lots of places I wish I could visit. Will you go to the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg? I’m very interested in all the art and architecture you’ll see in that city. In Leningrad. Very happy for you and Jack. I’ll wish you calm seas and beautiful weather.

  6. Looks like you and your husband did a great deal of work in that beautiful garden. Time for a cruise!

    • Lorraine,
Jack cuts the grass but the rest of it is all my work, he’s not a keen gardener, luckily I love it. I’m so glad to be back from the cruise now!
