I thought that some more photos of Edinburgh might be of interest to people who haven’t been there. This first one is a back view of the Bank of Scotland HQ. We didn’t walk around to the front so I’ll leave that for another day.
This is a gardener’s cottage which is in the grounds of the Princes Street gardens just below Edinburgh Castle. I think that it isn’t far from looking like a Hansel and Gretel gingerbread house.
This one as you can see is Fleshmarket Close grafitti and all, with the street sign above it. One of Ian Rankin’s books has this title. The close actually comes off Cockburn Street and the steps are very steep. There are lots of places like this in Edinburgh which is a very hilly city and you think that you’re never going to get to the top of the stairs.
And this is Arthur’s Seat, an extinct volcano. As you can see it’s just a stone’s throw from Princes Street and I’ve been assured that it’s a really easy walk up there, so we plan to do that during the Easter or summer holidays. It’s one of those things that we’ve put off for years as you do if you aren’t a tourist. We’ll have to pick a clear day for it so that I can get lots of good photos of the city, the River Forth and over to Fife.

I was born on the wrong continent! So jealous. . . . sigh.
Karen,
I hope you manage to get here some time although I think you might be shocked by the cold, even in summer. I hope to be able to add more interesting photos of places other than just Edinburgh in the future.
I love Edinburgh! It’s so funny though — we’ve never been able to get into Holyrood. Both times we were in Scotland the Queen was in residence. Hopefully we’ll have a chance next time we visit our daughter.
Speaking of the Queen — have you seen “The King’s Speech” yet? It’s been quite lauded here and deservedly so. I’d gladly watch Colin Firth read a phone directory for 2 hours. And it was so nice to see Helena Bonham Carter NOT playing a nutcase.
Firth and Geoffery Rush had such marvelous chemistry.
Pearl,
I haven’t been in to Holyrood either. The only touristy place I’ve been in Edinburgh is the castle and we go to the various museums and galleries quite often. I keep meaning to visit the bits of E which are underground and were sealed up because of the plague.
We must be about the only people who haven’t seen The King’s Speech. I hate going out in cold, dark winter nights and we’ve been busy at week-ends. Everybody is raving about it though, it has even gone down well in Dublin! I wonder if the Queen has seen it.
I agree with you about Colin Firth. I was amused at the way his wife was ‘all over him’ when they were in Hollywood recently, she looked a bit desperate, never a good sign! I’m not sure but I think maybe Helena is only a nutter when her husband is the director. She has always stood out from the rest though, I remember I first saw her playing Lady Jane Grey in something years ago and she was good even then.
