Some cream cakes

Yesterday morning we went to St Andrews and as Karen K at Books and Chocolate wanted to know what a coffee tower looked like I just had to buy some cakes, for blogging purposes you understand!

Three cakes

So here they are, they got a wee bit bashed in the box on the way home, the coffee tower is the one on the left and it’s like a very big profiterole but it’s filled with coffee flavoured whipped cream and has coffee flavoured icing on top.

The middle cake is called a French cherry delight, again it’s made from choux pastry like a profiterole but there is cherry sauce at the bottom and then it is filled with whipped cream and of course topped with a cherry.

The cake on the right is a chocolate tower and it is filled with ordinary whipped cream and topped with chocolate flavoured icing. They are very similar to those cakes which in France are called a religieuse. I think it would be better if the cream was chocolate flavoured too.

Here they are halved so that you can see how full they are. They are on a large meat platter which gives you an idea of their size.

My husband and I had half of each of them, well what else could we do, cream goes off so quickly!

  1. They look like super-fancy fabulous cream puffs! Yum!

They also remind me of an amazing Norwegian pastry I once had called skolebrot, which translates to schoolbread. I’m slightly embarassed to admit I had this amazing dessert at the Norwegian pavilion at Epcot/Disneyworld. It’s a sweet bread filled with pastry cream and topped with a sweet glaze and coconut. It’s wonderful.

    • Karen,
That Norwegian pastry sounds fab. I wonder why it’s called schoolbread, it sounds rather posh. I’ve been ‘pining for the fjords’ since I went to Norway on a school cruise when I was 12 but we didn’t have anything like that to eat. I’m proud to say that I’ve never been to a Disneyland/world! I might have done if I had known that they had great cakes though!

      • I wondered about the schoolbread name also, so I googled it and found out it’s called schoolbread because that’s what kids would eat after school.

I had to be dragged kicking and screaming to Disneyworld the first time I lived in Florida (I’ve lived there twice, we’re military and have moved six times in the past 15 years). I have to admit I love it.

        • Karen,

It beats what I had after school anyway!

I wouldn’t go to France to see Disneyworld, it’s a bit far, so Florida is a no go too. Last time we were in France it was before Disney opened I think. We used to move around a lot too, we had six moves in 12 years but we’ve been here for 23 years – I feel another move coming on though! At least you have a good excuse for moving.

  2. Coffee Tower = Amazing, I ended up here Looking for a similar or original recipe. I believe its top secret and even the workers who bake them dont have the full recipe. I dont mind buying them its just a treck to the other side of the country for them.

    • Fisher and donaldson coffee tower LOVER,
I know how you feel! It’s only about 25 miles for us to travel to St Andrews, of course they have shops in Dundee and Cupar too. It’s just as well we don’t live any closer as I hate to think what my waistline would be like then. I’ve made coffee flavoured cream before but haven’t tackled choux pastry yet. Thanks for stopping by and commenting.
