New Carpet

carpet and boots

I had wanted to do a before and after photo of the dining-room but it wasn’t to be. So here’s a photo of the new carpet which as you can see is a sort of oatmeal colour and has a slightly textured pattern on it which you can’t really see here. The carpet fitter was absolutely brilliant at his job – how often can you say that – and I’m really pleased with it especially as it won’t show up the crumbs so much! The old carpet was charcoal grey, a big mistake as it showed up every speck.

The boots are new too, I bought them when we were in England recently. My legs are normally covered up, this is a rare outing for them. My Dad always commented that he didn’t know I had legs whenever they got an airing! I’m not a shoe person at all, in fact I view shoes as objects of torture because I’m always bleeding from my heels and blistered so I tend to avoid them and wear clogs and flat boots all the time and then my feet are fine. I couldn’t walk in high heels to save my life. As a kid I dreaded the start of the new school term and new shoes. Those Clarks shoes were agony, I might as well have worn biscuit tins!

I haven’t been able to blog or visit blogs much for the last few days as I’ve been doing so much running around and trying to finish off things in the house before everyone gets here. So tomorrow I just have to bake the birthday boy’s cake and make the birthday meal – and then it’s Christmas! I hope your Christmas plans are on schedule.

I usually do a wee Winter Solstice blogpost, but not this year as I was so busy. The 21st here was indeed the darkest most dismal day and I could’ve been doing with a party then to cheer me up . It was one of those days when you needed a lamp on all the time – positively dreich. I’m so looking forward to having more light soon.

In Scotland we’re being encouraged to dose ourselves up with vitamin D, the easiest way is to take cod liver oil (yeugh). Apparently it’s the lack of sunlight here which gives us the highest rates of MS in the world. I’m going to be making my way to the health food shop soon and on that cheery note – cheerio.

If you’re in need of a bit of a laugh at the moment, give yourself a treat and watch good old Dick Emery. If I wore high heels I would walk like the ‘charming young lady’!

    • Jo,
Thanks, I hope you have a lovely Christmas too. The Book Jotter has been the source of lots of information and entertainment for me this year, so thank you for that too!

  1. Your new carpet is lovely. Isn’t it funny how much alike we think: I like Oriental rugs, especially darker colored ones, because you can spill anything on them and it won’t show!

I also agree with you about shoes: I hate them. I like boots or sandals. Shoes make my feet blister and bleed, too, no matter how loose I get them. And, with boots, I don’t have to think about which socks or stockings will match what I’m wearing. Pull on a comfy pair of boots and I’m ready to go.

Birthday wishes to your birthday boy (my brother-in-law’s birthday is on Christmas, too) and, of course, a Merry Christmas to you and Jack.

    • Joan,
It is quite spooky at times how alike we are. We nearly bought an oriental rug instead of a fitted carpet because we saw a really lovely one and thought it would be a good idea because we would be able to take it with us when we move. Then we thought of the horrible mess the gas men made of our floorboards when we had our new boiler fitted and decided against a rug and varnish. Merry Christmas to you and your Jack. My Jack is the birthday boy!

  2. Textured oatmeal! Same as my carpets! Just don’t spill anything on it, especially as it’s textured!
I’ve had shoes on for the last few days, because it got really cold, but I normally wear Crocs ALL the time! I was 9000ft up a mountain in Canada a couple of years ago – snow up to yon place – and what did I have on my feet? Socks and Crocs! My feet were actually very cosy, though they did get a little wet now and then, but they were great! No, I didn’t climb the mountain in them. I rode up in a gondola, gliding gently over the trees up 2000ft from the base station. Have a wonderful Jack’s birthday and Christmas!

    • Evee,
I have no hope of there being no spills especially as it’s in a dining-room but I’ve been assured it’ll be fine even with red wine. No doubt I’ll find out soon!
I’ve never had Crocs I usually wear Doctor Scholl clogs with socks which I find comfy. Going up a mountain in a gondola sounds fab, if just a wee bit scary. Have a great Christmas too, I’ve really enjoyed reading about all your gallivanting around.

  3. Lovely carpet.

Wish I could send you some of our sunshine. It’s a bit drizzly here off and on in what passes for winter, but Christmas day dawned spectacularly clear and beautiful.

My feet do not like shoes…which is one more good reason to live in a place where I can wear sandals all the time.

Going to a wedding in Scotland next October for a week and fear my toes will web before I get home.

    • Pearl,
It’s grey and a bit dampish here but so warm compared with last year so I’m not complaining.
It’s amazing how many women can’t wear shoes without being in agony.
October in Scotland can be lovely and golden so I have high hopes for that wedding, I’m thinking positive for it anyway!

      • Bless you, then. Keep those positive thoughts! I will too (because I’m not about to buy wellies for just the one week.)

Sadly, too many barefoot years have taken my AAAs to W (very trim to very wide). But fortunately, I have nice feet for sandals. Very large sandals.

        • Pearl,
It’s my wellies which I have difficulty getting on – due to expanding legs, mind you the wellies are about 30 years old and I used to be a very skinny thing. They’re now so tight I could patent them as leg hair removers!
