Decorating – again

I’m hoping to find the time to do a proper post tomorrow. I’ve been painting walls and ceilings this whole week but I can see the light at the end of the tunnel, and I don’t think it’s a train!

After I’ve finished all the painting I’ll have to seriously get down to sorting stuff out and either chucking out or taking to charity shops. The trouble is that a certain person close to me is such a hoarder and he doesn’t want to part with anything.

I’ve been trying to get him to let go of a reel to reel tape machine which is run by valves!! He hasn’t used it since I met him – a very long time ago and we’ve lugged it around several house moves.

Do you have anything in your house which you know you’ll never use but somehow just can’t get rid of?

  1. We have lots of stuff in our house I know we’ll never use again – like drawers full of neatly rolled up lengths of cable and different things I have no idea what they are for. A certain person close to me is also a hoarder. But I suppose I can’t really complain as he doesn’t moan about my book collecting habit.

Best of luck with sorting stuff out – I know how hard that is. We did get rid of lots the last time we moved but over the last two years more stuff has found its way here.

    • Margaret,
I have a drawer full of instructions for small electrical appliances which are long dead as well as loads of cables and wires. The good thing about moving house frequently is you can have a good clear out each time you move. We’ve been here for 24 years now and it’s a long time to keep accumulating stuff.

  2. He accuses me of being a hoarder, but he has his own hoard of stuff in the cellar! I’m not bad if I get rid of things before they acquire a tinge of sentimental value, so, now, it’s in and then out!

    • Joan,
Jack has a whole study full of stuff and it has still spilled out into the rest of the house. I find myself saying those words that might come in handy sometime because often when I get rid of something I discover a week later that it was the very thing which I need! Speaking of sentimental value – I have baby clothes, a pram and a cot. I suppose that must mean I’m every bit as bad as he is!

  3. I used to be a hoarder when I was younger, but now I am ruthless in throwing things out. I can’t imagine living with someone who didn’t share that philosophy!

    • How did you cure yourself of being a hoarder, Anbolyn? I need to know how I can change! I just can’t throw stuff away. I can give some stuff to other people, or to the charity shops because I don’t see what they do with it, but like Katrina, I’m more likely to say something might come in handy sometime! Or it’s that somebody I like gave me something. I may think it’s hideous but because they gave me it I can’t give it away. I think my friends have given up on me! What should I keep and what should I get rid of?

      • Evee,
I always said that I wasn’t going to be held back by possessions and I really mean it – but it’s easier said than done. When we downsize I’ll have to be really ruthless like Anbolyn. I have so many clothes which are not good enough for a charity shop and I hold on to them because I can use them for painting or gardening in – but I’ll never use them all, it’s mad!

  4. Well done you, for getting the decorating done! I’m still at the “can’t throw that out” stage, which means I still have as much stuff as ever!

    • Evee,
I’ve been papering and painting our bedroom all week and have managed to get rid of one broken chair! I’m going to the tip tomorrow, what an exciting life!

  5. After 15 years of being a navy wife and moving every 2 years I am pretty good at throwing out. My husband on the other hand…we won’t even go there:)

    • Peggy Ann,
My dad was a merchant seaman during the war and he kept the habit of being super tidy his whole life, like most sailors I think. His garage was completely empty whilst everybody else filled theirs up with everything – except a car!
