New House

Here are just a few photos which Jack took of the inside of our new house just before all our ‘stuff’ was unloaded into it, making it into a complete mess.

This is the sun room, which is the room which sold the place to us really. It’s better than a conservatory as it has a proper roof so is well insulated and it is original to the house, hasn’t been added on to it, and crucially also has central heating in it, which is more than can be said for all the conservatories which we looked at. The sun room is off the dining room. I suppose it’s a strange name for it but with all those windows it’s nice and light in there, even on a grey Scottish day.

The photo below was taken from just inside the front door, it’s the hall and stairs, and you can just see a bit of the dining room. It’s all very different from the old place, smaller rooms and very modern, but it was time for a change and hopefully a more comfortable way of life.

And the photo below is obviously of the kitchen.

I wish it looked like that now!

    • Peggy,
Well the house is 4 years old and could be doing with some buffing up in places but I’m quite happy with it as it is at the moment, I couldn’t face getting out paintbrushes or anything right now!

  1. Lovely house, Katrina! I too am envious of the kitchen. But I especially love the sun room where I can imagine you snuggled up with a good book and occasionally looking out into your garden which will probably have secret corners and wandering paths. Your last garden was so beautiful that I believe you’ll bring your magic touch to this one as well. I hope you and Jack will be very happy there!

    • Linda,
Thanks, I think we will be happy here when we get used to it, we really thought we would be in the west or central by now, but it just wasn’t to be. I’ll always miss that old mature garden, I wish I had your confidence that I’ll be able to make another nice garden, whatever, it’s going to be an expensive process!

      • Have a look round the neighbourhood and see what’s growing well in their gardens. Then hold a neighbourhood plant swap day! That way you can get to know your neighbours; help them to get new plants for their gardens and of course you get some too! That sun room looks lovely! A sitooterie! Looking forward to hearing more about the house soon!

        • Evee,
I’ve had a look around and I don’t see any acers which is a shame but I live in hope that the ones I brought might survive. Most of the gardens around here seem to be mainly grass, so there probably wouldn’t be much to swap – you have all the ideas though!

  2. We call it a sun room here in the U.S. I have a large house now that the kids are gone, but wish we had a sun room for reading and the extra light.

    • Lorraine,
I’ve wanted to move almost as soon as our boys got their own homes. I hated their empty bedrooms, I would have been happy for them to stay at home forever, but you have to let them go I suppose! I hope you get a sun room some day, they are great for reading and any other hobbies which need good light.

  3. Your new house looks fabulous! I love the conservatory, so bright. You’ll feel like you’re outside even when you’re inside. And your new kitchen looks like it’s well planned. Good move, Katrina!

    • Joan,
It does seem like a good move, apart from the distance to the nearest supermarket. We’re just going to have to be better organised in the future, and make lists of things that we need to get instead of being airy fairy as we were when we could walk to four different supermarkets within a fifteen minute walk from Dalserf!

  4. A sun room for reading in and drinking copious amounts of tea! Plus it will be warm in the winter.

Looking forward to seeing what the kitchen looks like now!

    • Jo,
The sun room does heat up very quickly, this house has super insulation compared with our old house. I’m looking forward to cheaper heating bills!

    • Pearl,
Apart from anything else, it’s just nice to have a different view from the kitchen window after 26 years of the same view!

  5. I am so dreadfully envious of your sunroom. And the kitchen is perfect. Ours is shaped like a square, giving Ken much too much space to look over my shoulder at what I’m concocting for dinner.

Two ovens? Lovely! That will be wonderful for when your sons are over for holidays.

I’d love to see more pictures. So much fun to picture you there.

    Judith

    • Judith,
I’m envious of your living room platform! I’ve always had two ovens, well for the last 15 years or so, very handy for cooking Sunday lunch when the boys are here. I’ll take more photos soon.

  6. Pretty! And how fun to plan out your decorating and furniture and garden, though I agree that moving is hell!

    • Anbolyn,
And it gets worse as you get older, unless you are good at culling the ‘stuff’ over the years!

    • Stefanie,
Thanks, quite a lot of what looks like kitchen cupboards is actually fridge-freezer, boiler cupboard and dish-washer so it doesn’t have as much storage space as our old kitchen, but we’re managing somehow.
