The Stephen/Hobson wedding in Glasgow was a great success. Yes it actually was a piss up in a brewery so it couldn’t really go very far wrong, there was no chance of drinking the place dry. I only recently discovered that people in the US have never heard of the often used British phrase – they couldn’t organise a piss up in a brewery to describe someone who is useless at everything.
Below is a photo that Jack took as we all waited for the arrival of the bride. Gordon is on the far left of course with his older brother Duncan beside him, Duncan won’t wear a kilt as you can see. Gordon’s kilt’s tartan is called Spirit of Scotland I believe. The other handsome chaps are friends from schooldays.
Of course The West Brewery has a bar/restaurant within it as well as function rooms and the staff couldn’t have been friendlier or more professional and hard working. The registrar was booked to come along and perform the actual ceremony, something that she must do several times each day probably but she took her time over it and had a lot of sensible things to say about marriage and relationships, maybe she doubles as a marriage guidance counsellor too! That was the first time I had been at a non-religious marriage and I must say I was very impressed with it.The registrar asked for no photos to be taken during the actual ceremony, I think that is sensible too.
So we scoot on to a photo taken after the event, just after the signing of the legal paper. It’s all red eye but you get the general idea.

Laura went for a 1950s style dress and hairdo, very stylish and different. Her hair is usually in shades of red/wine but she went for dark roots, ash blonde and purple underneath.
Gordon made all the ‘flower’ buttonholes and Laura’s bouquet from paper featuring the names of each persons’ favourite band and album names. It was all very music themed.
Below is a photo of their first dance, you can see that Laura means business as she has changed into her dancing shoes! As you see, the dress is longer at the back and underneath are tulle petticoats in purple, green and turquoise. It reminded me of a peacock’s tail. Lovely.
Below – Duncan and his partner Alex look like they’re really enjoying the beer!
It was a memorable day and I can’t wait to see the photos the photographer took.

No, that is not an expression I have ever heard before. I find things like that very interesting.
The wedding looks lovely and everyone looks very happy. No pictures of you though. I seem to remember you talking about your attempts to find a dress for the wedding. I would love to see what you settled on.
Jennifer,
No, the photographer took plenty and other people may have but I don’t have any photos of me or Jack – yet.
Katrina,
I’m so glad you posted pictures of the wedding! It looks like it was a delightful event, relaxed and fun, so unlike many of our American weddings which are major productions and stressful on everyone.
I, too, would like to see what you decided to wear since I also remember when you were first thinking about that issue, so I hope we get to see more!
Paula
Paula,
Believe me, most weddings here are massive production numbers too and I think that they contribute to the high divorce rates! I’ll definitely post more photos when I have them, but I really wasn’t that happy with my own outfit and I’m annoyed that I wore a hat, although everyone said I should!
I’ve only just discovered that you and Peggy are pals!
They look so happy! Laura looks lovely. Gordon is the spitting image of Jack! And now you are a mother-in-law.
Peggy,
Yes that was pointed out to me by a guest at the reception – that I’m now a mother-in-law, – but nothing like my own m-i-l, I can assure you! Gordon has looked like Jack since he was a baby but since growing a beard too people mention it all the time.
What a wonderful dress! And I love Laura’s shoes! Looks like a lovely day đŸ™‚
Sandra,
She designed the dress herself and sent her measurements to a business on the internet, they made a great job of it. The wedding dresses in shops here all seem very similar, almost no bodice at all – so it was nice to be different.
It looks like a lot of fun! I like that they made their wedding ‘their’ wedding, not some cookie cutter affair out of a Bride’s magazine.
Joan,
Yes it was all very unique and personal, Gordon even made the tablet that they gave away as ‘favours’ to the guests instead of the sugared almonds that I think are often used.
Congratulations
to your family. Looked like a wonderful day. Love the kilts. Just finished “Outlander” novel. How timely. Ha.
Lorraine,
Thanks, it was a memorable day. Everywhere we go in Scotland seems to have been used for Outlander filming. We will probably be visiting Wigtown soonish to look at some bookshops!
Please, please, please say hi to Shaun for me at The Bookshop. You will have to be very brave, but you can do it!!
Lorraine,
We will definitely say hi from you when we get there, sometime towards the end of August I think. Ooh, fingers crossed we survive the encounter!
Katrina,
I’m so excited and happy to see the photos. What a handsome wedding party! Gordon and his bride’s facial expressions were so radiant. I loved her dress and adored the heels so much. Fascinating! Thank you so much for showing us. Loved it.
I do hope you didn’t have to come straight home.
Just went back to have another gawk at the wedding party photo. Wow–how lucky and how difficult it is to have a really good photo of each person. And each person is perfect. And Gordon, so obviously in love–how wonderful.
Judith,
They do look so happy, they’ve been together since they were 16 although it was a long distance romance for a long time as Laura is from the north of England. We stayed in Glasgow overnight and travelled back east on Sunday afternoon after going around the city a bit. The weather was not great, typically today has been too hot, the high 70s F, but we’re back to rain tomorrow, thunder and lightning!
What a happy couple! Look s like a great day. Love the bride’s dress with the colorful under ruffles!
Stefanie,
It was a great day, so much better and less stressful than most weddings I’m sure.
