A couple of months ago most parts of Scotland and northern England were hit by Storm Arwen and loads of trees were blown down in the up to 90 miles per hour winds – and we hit two of them on our way home that night! The windscreen suffered crazing and there was a dent to the pillar beside it about 2.5 cm wide by 4 cm long. The dent looks bigger in the photo.
It seems no time since that huge storm but last night we were hit by Storm Malik (I thought these storms were named in alphabetical order, but apparently not). We did NOT go out in our car but walked as usual for The Guardian and saw one of my old tree friends that we pass every day had succumbed. This is one of the few deciduous trees that have fallen, they’re not usually so susceptible when they have no leaves on them. This tree lying across the road was actually enormous, but it looks like a branch here, maybe I should have taken the photo from the other side.
With the Queen’s platinum jubilee being celebrated this year (70 years on the throne) the plan is for 70,000 trees to be planted this year, but at this rate that will only be replacing all of the trees that have been blown down. Sadly a few people have been killed by falling trees. Storm Corrie is due to hit us overnight!

I’m glad you’re safe Katrina, and hopefully still safe after Corrie! Should you be interested, Malik was named by the Danish weather people as apparently it’s a Danish storm. You just got the edges of it!
Sandra,
I had heard that it was the Danish who named it Malik, I think most of our storms come from that direction, although when I’v ebeen in Scandinavia they’ve said they hardly ever get high winds. Maybe they didn’t get the alphabetical order memo!
Oh dear. But at least you weren’t hurt when you hit the tree. A tree fell on my sister’s house two weeks ago and caused extensive damage. She has a row of pines to the side. Another storm hit the east coast this weekend and they got 20 inches of snow. She was very nervous and afraid another tree was going to fall. Thankfully, one didn’t but all that snow on top of a damaged roof is not a good thing.
Jennifer,
Your poor sister! That is a nightmare, I’ve always made sure not to buy a house which had big overhanging trees nearby. I hope that the trees belong to your sister so she can have them removed for the sake of safety. We saw your bad weather on TV, and I thought – what a good thing you had moved from CT!
Gosh, you were lucky! Or unlucky, depending on how you look at it…! It’s been a really stormy winter, hasn’t it? I don’t remember a year when we had so many coming so quickly one after the other like this.
FictionFan,
It has been really stormy. Corrie came back to have another go at us today and it has been worse than the first visit, but there hasn’t been much mention of it today on TV. I get really fed up with constant high winds, whichever direction I’m walking in I seem to be walking against the wind!
