Some National Trust properties have an area devoted to secondhand booksales and the one at Culzean Castle is the best one I’ve been to so when we were over in that direction visiting Dumfries House recently we took the opportunity to peruse their books. I bought:
The Doll’s House by Evelyn Anthony
Ordinary Families by E. Arnot Robertson
In Bed with an Elephant A Journey Through Scotland’s Past and Present by Ludovic Kennedy
The Bridal Path by Nigel Tranter
The Freebooters by Nigel Tranter
Have you read any of these ones?
I went though a big Evelyn Anthony phase about seven years ago and read every book I could find, including this one, which I definitely enjoyed.
I own a Tranter or two but haven’t read them yet, although assume I would enjoy.
Constance,
I read her in the 1970s when they tended to be still rooted in WW2 so this one with its Cold War plot will be a change.
I usually enjoy Tranter’s books, I think he knew his stuff history-wise, but Jack doesn’t rate him that much as a writer.
Nice finds!
Hi Katrina,
I read some Evelyn Anthony back in the 1970s, but I don’t think I’ve read this one. I love the cover of In Bed with Elephants. And Nigel Tranter is a new name for me. Happy reading!
Judith,
I’m really looking forward to reading In Bed with Elephants! I really admired the author – Ludovic Kennedy.
