New to Me Books – from Edinburgh

We visited Edinburgh today, dodging Princes Street as there are no secondhand bookshops there, we headed for Stockbridge where there are a few charity bookshops. I bought:

Midnight is a Place by Joan Aiken

Elsie Piddock by Eleanor Farjeon

My Career Goes Bung by Miles Franklin

Little Plum by Rumer Godden

The Little White House by Elizabeth Goudge

The Stolen Sister by Joan Lingard

The Fortnight in September by R.C. Sherriff

Quite a few of these ones are aimed at children or young adults. Have you read any of them?

  1. A nice haul! I have read Midnight Is a Place which takes place in the NY sewers, if I recall correctly. And I have read Little Plum, but not for a very long time.

The Little White Horse is my favorite Goudge – it is sentimental but delightful. I also enjoyed The Fortnight in September not that long ago.

    Enjoy!

    • Constance,
Thanks, it seems like I did well this time around, the last time I didn’t find any books I wanted to buy – a first for me in Edinburgh!

  2. My Career Goes Bung is the sequel to My Brilliant Career, practically required reading for Australians when I was young!. I read them both a long time ago and enjoyed them but I want to read them again. I especially enjoyed the beautiful descriptions of the countryside.

    • Lisa,
I read My Brilliant Career just a couple of months ago so I was pleased to see this one which I didn’t realise existed.
      Thanks for dropping by.
      Katrina

  3. The Fortnight in September is so good! I loved Midnight is a Place when I was a teenager. I had forgotten about it and just was reminded when I saw it on my sister’s shelves. I am pretty sure I read Little Plum when I was small but I don’t remember much about it.
That is a lovely selection of books. I wish I could have wandered through the bookshops with you!

    • Jennifer,
I wish you coud have been with me too, although the shops aren’t very big and there’s nothing like your big library sales here. Rumer Godden seems to have written quite a lot of books featuring dolls. I think I’ll read The Fortnight in September soon.

  4. Hi Katrina,
Yes, Joan Aiken. How I wish I could find more of the so-called “romantic suspense” or gothic fiction that she wrote in the 1960s and 1970s. And actually, I’d love to read more of just about everything she wrote. Years ago I used to find copies of her adult stuff at library book sales, but not for many years now.
I always loved Elizabeth Goudge. Would love to find more of hers as well.
    A very good haul!!
