Funny Place Names

As you can see from today’s Guardian I’m only 19 miles from Crackpot. It’s very strange because I thought I was a lot closer!

The photo is from an article about strange place names which you can read here if you’re interested.

I think it was written because the towns of Dull in Scotland and Boring in the US recently became twinned. The K.Stephen in the photo is referring to Kirkby Stephen of course and not Katrina.

  1. They were chatting about this on Radio 2 the other morning, some great place names but not sure I would like some of the bad language ones uti suppose that is our understanding of the words.

I would love to live in Crackpot though!

    • Jo,
I have heard that people living in Scunthorpe have a difficult time ordering things on the internet because their address is blocked out automatically. Next time I’m in Yorkshire I’m definitely going to Crackpot.

  2. Oh, Katrina, you are such a riot! (i.e. hilarious). “Crackpot–I thought I was much closer.” Ken roared when I read this to him as well.

Back again, trying to reconnect with book blogdom, still wanting to visit England, but the prices in this Olympic year are scandalous. Guess I’ll wait til next year. Because I’m still on crutches, that’s probably a good idea.

    • Judith,
I was really getting worried about you, I’m relieved to know that you’re still with us and that I gave you both something to laugh about. I can be a bit of a riot/scream at times! It’s being so cheery as keeps me goin’ mrs.

Next year will be far better I’m sure, I can’t wait to get all this Olympics nonsense over with. I had heard that the hotels and such were all hiking up their prices – as if London and the UK isn’t expensive enough at the best of times.

BTW – I love your new header photo, mind you they always look great. What is the river called?

  3. What a surprise when I read you were near Crackpot! I read on and saw the signpost! I know exactly where that sign post is! It’s in Swaledale, North Yorkshire, about two and a half miles from the village I lived in for 6 years! Following the B6270 to Reeth you would pass my old house in the village of Healaugh, pronounced Heelaw, between Low Row and Reeth.

Crackpot Hall was an old farm house that partly collapsed due to mining in the area.

    • Evee,
I really feel the urge to visit Crackpot now, next time we’re in that area for definite. Houses collapsing due to mining, that sounds familiar, just like Fife.

      • Heck! It’s taken me till now to realise why you said you were 19 miles from Crackpot!!!!! Guess I’m the crackpot! As a friend of mine used to say, It may take a long time, but I get there in the end!
