Kellie Castle in Fife, Scotland

I was having a look at photos on my computer and realised that I hadn’t done a blogpost about Kellie Castle. It dates from the 14th century and is supposed to be haunted – is there a castle which isn’t haunted? Anyway, we went there one afternoon in July, it was a lovely day as you can see I hope, but sadly it was one of the very few good days we had last summer. If you want to read about the castle’s history, and see some photos of the interior, have a look here.

The gardens at Kellie Castle were looking particularly good, I think we caught the flowers just at their best for once. There are various nooks and crannies that you can go and have a sit down in and enjoy the views and plenty of countryside to wander in.

The clematis was rampant, unlike my own which all got that ghastly blight – again.

I know that we’re all supposed to love red roses but yellow ones have always been my favourites, these ones were lovely in combination with the clematis, but I don’t know what kind they were.

Who lives in a house like this? Well I wouldn’t mind at all, especially if the garden goes with it. I think this cute wee place must have originally been lived in by a gardener, maybe the castle’s head gardener. It’s like something out of a fairy tale.

I don’t know about you – but that look back into last summer cheered me up a wee bit, which was just what I was needing, because just as everything was beginning to grow in my garden – back came the snow and ice. It’s a hard life being a plant in a British garden, nipped in the bud just when you thought that winter had gone. If we don’t get a half decent summer this year I might have to go and find some good weather for a while, but where?

  1. I love that little house in the garden, too. I could easily live there. What a beautiful garden.

An ex-neighbor from Massachusetts called yesterday. I hate Philadelphia, but I’d rather spend my winters here. New England is still digging out and drying out from a very snowy and / or wet winter after a series of storms.

    • Joan,
Just think, with such a small house – there wouldn’t be a lot of housework to do!

This winter seems to be never ending, it wouldn’t be so bad if we had a good summer to look forward to but our summers just get worse and worse. You need a summer amd winter home by the sound of it.

  2. Beautiful photos, Katrina. I love Kellie Castle. I think it’s because it’s a small, very Scottish castle with lovely, well-proportioned rooms. I especially like the Professor’s room and the nursery. The walled garden is very wanderable and I could live in that wee cottage easily. The sunshine and plants makes me long for spring and summer!

    • Linda,
That was the first time we had been to Kellie as when we went some years ago it was shut for refurbishment, it is lovely. Fingers crossed we get some decent weather this year!

  3. The cottage suits Hagrid, but would be a bit close for someone his size…

I love some seasons – mostly spring and fall, but you can keep the winter. When I lived in colder climes I sustained a rather bleak depression from the last fallen leaf until the forsythia resurrected themselves with the golden promise that all was not, in fact, lost.

Since I moved to Hawaii, 22 years ago, I have seen a pronounced change (for the better, of course) in my mood and attitude. I must run on a solar battery!

    • Pearl,
I think Hagrid would have to stand in the middle of that house.

A lot of people are on solar lights here for that very reason. We had our first snow in early October and it snowed again last week – it’s just too long to put up with it, especially if you haven’t had a decent summer.

  4. I love Kellie Castle. It’s very homely. The gardens are fabulous too. Your pics are lovely! Oh for a good summer this year!

    • Evee,
Thanks, we’ll definitely be going back to Kellie Castle. Right now I’d settle for the temperature being what it should be at this time of the year, it’s -5 wind chill here but feels colder, at least we don’t have snow now!
