Happy New Year

Happy New Year to everyone who visits this wee blog of mine. The past year hasn’t been a wonderful one globally, so let’s all keep our fingers crossed that 2016 will be better.

Due to unforeseen circumstances I haven’t been able to get around to writing about all the books I’ve read in 2015, and I had been intending to do a Read Scotland 2015 roundup before the end of the year. I hope to catch up early on in the New Year.

This year I read well over 100 books, but lots of them were from the local libraries, we were boosting their borrower numbers in an effort to stop the local council closing them, mind you they were all books that I would have got around to reading at some point, and I only cheated a couple of times and just took out a book with no real intention of reading it. But the decision to close had been made before there was even a council vote on the subject so it was all to no avail.

Anyway, in 2016 I plan to concentrate more on my own unread books, aiming to get through at least 50 of them and hopefully even more than that. I’m hoping to do some more cookery blogposts. I had planned to have a regular Foodie Friday post but that idea went to hell almost as soon as I thought of it, mainly because I didn’t get around to doing much baking, and also what I did do didn’t turn out that well. Maybe a ‘guess what it’s meant to be’ photo would be quite entertaining though! As Jack often says in those circumstances – It’ll be good with custard!

  1. Happy new year to you, Katrina. I was sorry to hear about the libraries, I know that is disheartening. I will be aiming at reading more from my TBR piles also.

    • tracybham,
They are only saving £500,000 a year by closing the libraries, and I doubt if they’ll even save that much, it’s a drop in the ocean considering the council budget. I really must read my own books – or stop buying more. I hope you and yours have a great 2016!

  2. Good health, happy reading, good weather, and a bright New Year to you.

The “good with custard” comment reminds me of something my mother would say when regarding a dress that perhaps wasn’t quite what she had in mind: “It’ll look good under a coat”.

    • Valerie,
Thanks for all those good wishes – the same to you, at least you are guaranteed better weather than I am!

I love that “It’ll look good under a coat” and I so sympathise as nothing that I make ever seems to turn out as well as it does inside my head.

  3. Happy New Year! A for Foodie Friday, Friday happens once a week giving you a chance to start it up every seven days 😉

Hope 2016 is off to a good start!

    • Stefanie,
Happy New Year. We had a family day today which was a nice start to 2016 although a bit tiring for me with so much cooking involved – again!

  4. Happy New Year.

Sad to hear about your library, shamefully I haven’t stepped in one for over a year. Time as always I suppose is my excuse.

Look forward to reading your blog in 2016, whatever the posts may be!

    • Jo,
I hope 2016 is a good one for you. You did read a load of books last year Jo but I suppose most of them would have been your own or review copies. I think it’s libraries in very small communities which are most at risk so that probbaly doesn’t apply to your local one.

  5. Sad about the libraries. Here they are more than just books – for many people, it’s their primary access to the internet as well. A bit ironic. I haven’t used a library since college (university) – I’m a bit of a germphobe and handling books that have been well used wigs me out a bit.

Happy New Year a bit after the fact. We welcomed in the new year on a ship in the Antarctic peninsula. I’ve posted pictures on facebook, if you are interested. Amazing holiday!

    • Pearl,
I saw on Facebook that you were off on a cruise a few weeks ago. Happy New Year, it must have been a different experience for you this time around.

It’s the same here, libraries are used by people who don’t have access to computers or are places for ‘jobs clubs’ to meet up and get info. There are always books on the ‘new’ shelves here so you can borrow books before anyone else has got their mits on them, or request them before they are published and then you are the first in the queue!
