Robert Burns is for life, not just for Burns Night

You might know that Fife Council planned to close 16 libraries in April but we have now discovered that they can’t actually just make that decision. Apparently they have to take it to a ‘scrutiny committee’ (I know – who knew?! – not them obviously). So the upshot is that the libraries have been given a reprieve, I think for a year. But it looks like this will just be a delay of the closures, although we live in hope of the library at Glenwood remaining open permanently.

  1. Thanks for the links! I especially appreciate (as a librarian and reader) the Scottish novels to watch out for this year. The Other Mrs. Walker and The Amber Shadows look intriguing.
I’m so glad you get a reprieve on the library closures. I hope something can be done to keep them open. It is just mind-boggling that the politicians don’t see the importance of libraries to the community.

    • Anbolyn,
I know, it’s mind-boggling and depressing that the local politicians have no feeling for their communities and apparently don’t care about books or readers. I’m glad you found the links interesting. I’ll be looking out for a few of them too.

  2. yea for the libraries! Love the links too. Especially the new books this year. I see James Oswald made the list! I’d better get busy and get Prayer for the Dead read!

  3. When it comes to libraries, I must admit I’m in the front row voicing my opinions. Thank goodness for a year’s reprieve! I’m so glad.

After that, I think library lovers need to hold sit-ins, protest marches, and acts of civil disobedience to make sure that libraries stay open. There’s no excuse for such wrong-headedness when research has proven how valuable and helpful libraries are in the lives of people. People need to rise up.
Now I’m sounding like Democratic Candidate Bernie Sanders. Go, Bernie! But Bernie, I do think Hillary has more experience.

    • Judith,
The trouble is that people around here seem so fatalistic and negative and they just think – well they’ve decided they are shutting the libraries and we can’t do anything about it. But we have to keep up the pressure on the council.
I’ve been seeing the news from Iowa today and watched some C-Span yesterday about the election. I just don’t want Trump to get in. He’s a nutcase!

    • Stefanie,
Fingers crossed. I really wouldn’t mind paying a wee bit more in council tax if it meant the libraries could stay open.
