It was back in October when we visited nearby Aberdour Castle for the second time, it must have been about 15 years since we first went there. It’s just a ruin now but there are parts of it which are quite habitable – well almost. If you want to enlarge the photos click on them.
The gardens are well maintained now and they even have an orchard.
The photo below was taken from the Doocot (Dovecote)
But there are habitable rooms in the castle as you can see below. With a few rugs, tapestries and curtains I could quite happily move in!
There is a rare painted ceiling
And a large hall which is actually bigger than these photos make it look.
I’m sure you can hire this place for a wedding, if you are so inclined.
James Douglas, the 4th Earl of Morton acquired this castle in 1564. He loved gardens and his travelling in Europe and particularly Italy had influenced him when he set about planning his garden. Sadly it doesn’t take long for gardens to disappear once a property falls into disuse.

If the orchard is maintained they presumably get fruit. What happens to it, do you know? Do the gardeners get all of it or is it donated to a local food shelf maybe for those in need?
Stefanie,
The produce certainly won’t go to waste. Sometimes places like this have a wee stall with fruit or veg which has just been picked, so visitors can buy it, there’s usually an honesty box! Otherwise the local council might take apples and use them in school dinners. There’s also a cider making business not far away and they even take surplus fruit from any gardeners, depending how much fruit you give them they’ll give you bottles of cider in return. The supermarkets give any unsaleable but still edible fresh food to local food banks. My parents (now long dead) would not have believed that food banks would be a thing in the 21st century!
Attractive but chilly!
I always think, “Oh, my books could be so well organized if I had more space,” but my own comfort is a close second place in consideration.
Constance,
I just wish I/we had enough shelf space for all of our books as I find it hard to weed them out. I don’t like having overflow in the garage, it’s not the best place for books!
