The Great British Bake Off – again

This programme is just about the only ‘must watch’ one for me at the moment but I was sad when Cathryn had to leave last week. Obviously I was hoping that James the young Scottish chap with the lovely hand-knitted Fair Isle jumpers would win.

But Cathryn came a close second for me because not only is she a great baker but she has a lovely habit of giving a running commentary on everything and talking to inanimate objects.
Cathryn

I loved her reaction to things going wrong – no black belt cursing and swearing on the BBC of course but she did say: Oh my giddy aunt! – a lot, and there’s not enough of that one around to suit me. Last week she even resorted to Heavens to Betsy! The only person I’ve heard saying that recently is myself and I even give Heavens to Murgatroyd an airing now and again.

I’m reserving my black belt cursing for all the ghastly politicians who are cluttering up our TV screens at the moment, on both sides of the pond.

Anyway, here’s a wee taster of the Bake Off, as you can see, Cathryn is the young woman at the beginning of it. She has gone back to looking after her young family but I’m sure she’ll end up using her talent for baking somehow in the future.

  1. This is the first series of The Great British Bake Off that I’ve watched. How did I miss it before – it’s fantastic and I love it. Poor Cathryn, I was hoping she’d stay in, she’s lovely. I see it’s Patisserie tonight – not easy! I’d like Danny or James to win, but I hope it’s not Brendan or John.

Did you know Cathryn and Sarah-Jane have a blog? http://sarahjaneandcathryn.blogspot.com/

    • Margaret,
I can hardly believe that next week is the final already, it has flown past. I think the challenges have been so difficult, I’d just about faint if I had to do some of them, and with very few instructions too. Fingers crossed for James then, as Danny has just been knocked out.

I didn’t know that they had a blog, thanks for the info. Guess where we were today – Duddo!! We never would have found out about it if you hadn’t written about it in BooksPlease. I think it’s an amazing place and we had it all to ourselves on a beautiful day too. Thanks for pointing us in Duddo’s direction.

      • I’m so glad you liked Duddo and it was such a beautiful day yesterday, the views must have been really good! We spent the afternoon in the garden whilst the weather was so sunny – but we did want to get out and about, so I hope it’s going to as nice today as we’d like to go over to Lindisfarne.

Fingers well and truly crossed for James now.

        • Margaret,
It’s definitely got to be James now – surely!

It was a gorgeous day at Duddo yesterday and so silent – when the fighter jets had flown past! We’re hoping to get to Lindisfarne on Friday, fingers crossed for that too.

          • We didn’t get to Lindisfarne yesterday – the tides weren’t right for us! Maybe another day. On Saturday we’re going to look after our son’s animals whilst he and his family go off to Disneyland Paris for a few days. They live in Bathgate so I’m hoping to visit a few places such as Stirling Castle and maybe Edinburgh (anywhere but the hospital, I’ve seen enough of that this year) and maybe a trip to a beach somewhere.

          • Margaret,
What a shame about the tides, that’s why I’m not too hopeful that we’ll get there tomorrow but we’ll give it a go. We’re just outside York at the moment. Stirling Castle is my favourite one and if you do go to Edinburgh there are loads of Scottish National Trust places to visit not far from Edinburgh and there’s The Georgian House in Charlotte Square and Gladstone’s Land on the Royal Mile, free if you’re in the NT. There’s Portobello beach not far from Edinburgh but I’ve never been, I just know the beaches in Fife and the best ones are St Andrews and Elie, and they’re quite a trek from Bathgate I think. Have a good time and take a coat!

  2. I love reading all the re-caps of this show on the British blogs! I so wish I could watch it myself. It looks really entertaining. Our cooking competition shows need more people who say ‘heavens to Betsy’! The constant beeping out of obscenities makes them tedious to watch.

    • Anbolyn,
I usually hate programmes involving people competing with each other but this is really enjoyable and has lovely looking things to eat on view and of course the occasional disaster! I think people should be well warned that they’ll be out if they keep having to be bleeped as it’s SO ANNOYING!
