I haven’t actually watched the Wimbledon final yet, purely because I couldn’t stand the stress. I watched the first set, which had been going so well, then he started to fall apart a bit and I knew I wouldn’t be able to stand it, so I took myself out to the garden, luckily it was a perfect day for reading outside.
Jack was much braver and watched the whole thing and I trotted in and out a few times to see how things were going. But each time I did that – Andy lost the point, so I knew I was jinxing him!
It was when I heard screams coming from a house in the next street and chants of ‘Andy, Andy’ that I knew he had won and it was safe to go in again. I could just about skelp Andy’s legs for overlooking his mum in the kiss and hugfest celebration though!
I photographed the television pictures of his celebrations.
I’m going to watch the highlights tonight and I’m thinking that if Andy is going to go back to Dunblane to celebrate, I just might have to go too.
I got up at 6 am to watch the match and dozed through the first two sets. I was wide awake for the third, though, and very happy when Andy won. It was so funny and bizarre that he skipped over his own mother!
If you go to Dunblane I hope we get to hear all about it.
Anbolyn,
I’m thinking that it’s typical of a Scottish son to forget his mum! If he goes to Dunblane – I will go because we hope to move in that direction, so it’ll be a chance to have a look around the area.
Bud had booked a deep-sea fishing excursion, so the kids/grandkids watched the first set (getting up at 3am to do so!!) and taped the rest with strict orders to remain silent til they could watch.
Amazing!
Pearl,
I can still hardly believe that he won it, I was beginning to fear that he never would!
Congratulations Scotland!
Peggy Ann,
Yes, it has made everybody optimistic, even the stock exchange in London has gone up, but it’ll be some time before an Englishman manages to win Wimbledon I think.
Congratulations to a fine SCOTTISH tennis player. Your anxiety sounds like my husband’s for the New York Giants. He swears as soon as he turns the TV to the game, they goof up! I’m also glued to the TV for the Tour de France. Congrats to Dan Martin from IRELAND on a Stage win. I started watching for the beautiful and awesome overhead shots of the countries, but now I’m following and understanding MOST of the strategies. Good luck to Garmin-Sharp, BMC and Sky.
Lorraine,
Yes, they’ll have to wait a good long while before they get an English champion I think. I haven’t watched any of the Tour de France so far this year. It sounds like you have become an expert on it!
Katrina,
As one who watches tennis religiously, I am happy to say that Andy Murray played brilliantly! The most incredible, unbelievable shots coming from his racket. We were cheering like mad. Just one inspired maneuver after another. Inspiring.
Best,
Judith
Judith,
I did see the highlights, I could enjoy that as I knew he had already won. It was amazing and I know it was incredibly hot on Centre Court, how they manage to run around like that – I just don’t know! Now Andy can relax, the pressure to win Wimbledon is off him. I hope he wins plenty more though.
Katrina,
Never worry about Andy and the heat. It’s been said many times that he really likes competing when it’s hot. And, after all, he chose (he actually chose?) to train in Florida!! Even in the summer. Double UGH!
Judith
Judith,
Isn’t it weird, he said it was cooler than in Miami where he trains. He did go to Spain to train when he was very young though so I suppose that would help to get used to it. We are all just about gasping here as it was about 70 F today, and it doesn’t often get much hotter than that.
