The 1936 Club which is organised by Simon and Karen will be running from the 12th to 18th of April. That year was a very good one for publishing and I’ve already read quite a lot of books from that year as you can see from the links below. Of course I’ll be reading more during the fortnight starting on Monday, there are a lot to choose from!
Wild Harbour by Ian Macpherson
Prefects at Springdale by Dorita Fairlie Bruce
The Talisman Ring by Georgette Heyer
The Sussex Downs Murder by John Bude
Flowers for the Judge by Margery Allingham
In Dubious Battle by John Steinbeck
Murder in Piccadilly by Charles Kingston
Behold, Here’s Poison by Georgette Heyer
No Place Like Home by Beverley Nichols
August Folly by Angela Thirkell
I just finished Death at the President’s Lodging. I assumed it would be great and I usually love academic settings but actually found it fairly dull. I won’t read your review until I write mine!
Constance,
It isn’t one of his best, I think he improved with age.
I loved August Folly, a great read for the spring. This reminds me I haven’t read any Thirkells in a while and I have at least a dozen left on the TBR shelf!
Karen K,
I read them all out of order so I’m supposed to be re-reading them in order but somehow it isn’t happening fast – too many books!
1936 seems to have been a particularly great year, doesn’t it? Apart from The Talisman Ring I haven’t read any of the others you’ve listed. I do have copies of The Sussex Downs Murder and Behold, Here’s Poison but I don’t think I will get to them this week.
Helen,
I really like Heyer’s mysteries, she still wrote snappy dialogue in them, as in her romances, I always find that entertaining.
