Just when you give up on there ever being any good news! But will he go?

EU Referendum
I swore that I wasn’t going to mention anything about the EU referendum here but that scunner of a man Michael Gove has annoyed me so much that I’m sticking my head up over the parapet.
I’m for staying IN Europe although I think that our position in it is far from perfect, but then what is perfect? Every country in the EU has their gripes over it and I really think that they will eventually have to curtail the freedom of movement within the EU and keep it only for people who have skills that are required.
So what enraged me about Michael Gove yesterday? It was the fact that he has dragged his elderly parents into the campaign and what they are saying is just completely WRONG. They are arguing that their family fish merchant business went down the drain in the 1970s due to Britain entering the EU. What rubbish!
As it happens my family had exactly the same business experience of being fish merchants (my grandfather and uncle) – my father had a fruit/veg/flower shop. They all went out of business in the late 1960s, before Britain entered the European Common Market and the reason they went out of business was the huge upsurge in supermarkets at that time.
As a ten year old I witnessed their conversations about being squeezed out of business due to not being able to compete with the supermarket prices. The same thing happened all over the country and small shops like theirs slowly gave up the struggle to compete with the supermarkets, it just wasn’t possible. Some hung on longer than others but as you know an independent food shop is a rarity in a British High Street nowadays and has been for a very long time.
So why is Michael Gove dragging his elderly father into the argument? Gove is quite a bit younger than I am, too young to know what was actually going on – whatever, it was nothing to do with EU fishing rules.
Never forget that Gove was one of the MPs who merrily charged us the British taxpayers for his family’s holidays at very expensive spa hotels and he also “flipped” his mortgage at our expense. If he had been anything close to being a gentleman he would have found a hole for himself and stayed down there, instead of carrying on regardless, like someone who has nothing to be ashamed of. If any of us had stolen like that we would of course have been banged up in jail.
I’m voting IN on the 23rd because I’m sensible enough to realise that you can’t turn the clock back and I know that we will be ‘done over’ by everyone when it comes to making separate trade deals. Even if the OUT vote wins we’ll still have to adhere to all the EU rules to be able to trade with those countries, and we’ll have absolutely no say in anything.
Working conditions will plummet and Gove and company will do what they really want which is to dismantle the welfare state. You can wave bye bye to the National Health Service, and that’s another piece of Brexit duplicity that’s enraging me – they speak as if this mythical £350 million would be given to the NHS. But they KNOW that that is a mythical and in fact just plain non-existent amount of money, and they also know that they intend to whittle away at the health service until that is non-existent too.
I blame David Cameron for this whole debacle, he should have had the guts to stand up to the more eccentric and bullying members of Parliament who howled for this referendum, because the very last thing that this country needs is more instability but that’s exactly what he has given us.
As for Boris Johnson – he’s just on a Boris for PM campaign and if that comes to pass there’s just no hope for any of us.
Burying News
I was listening to the radio in the car this afternoon and it was a discussion about yesterday’s Budget. In the course of the chat one commentator came out with the information that it was also the day when Boris Johnson, the Mayor of London was given permission to buy a couple of water cannon for use on London streets against any future demonstrators!! Obviously that day was chosen so that the news would be well and truly buried amongst all the Budget shenanigans.
I can hardly believe that Britain has changed so much that things like that can happen, but apparently it has. Water cannon hit people with such force that it can and does knock their eyes out, break limbs and generally maim human beings. Next time you see that blond mop on the TV don’t think to yourself – ‘ah doesn’t it make you proud to be British, when we can have such an eccentric as London’s mayor‘. Do think that wolves often come in sheep’s clothing! Boris is not a lovable eccentric, he’s downright evil.
In the UK we can’t have spontaneous demonstrations nowadays, you have to get written permission from the authorities to hold any sort of gathering, and you are likely to end up being ‘kettled’ by the police for hours on end. In other words – treated far worse than they would be allowed to treat animals.
It amazes me that the British public in general are so docile, we put up with far more nonsense from our governments than any other nations do. It has always been that way, our governments always want to punish the ‘little’ people, you and me. It’s the reason that rationing went on for years after World War 2. Keep them hungry, keep them down!
If you put on your TV for the news on any day, you will almost certainly see a demonstration in some foreign country about something, usually they want more freedom than they have, but in reality a lot of those people have more freedoms than we have here. They’re free to demonstrate for one thing.
My parents, that generation who ‘fought for freedom’ would be wondering why they bothered, if they had lived to see the Britain of today.
It could be another reason for Scotland going independent, just to disassociate ourselves from the barbarisms of England and London in particular.
European Summit – again
This would be a tweet if I were on Twitter.
Boris Johnson said that David Cameron ‘played a blinder’ at the summit yesterday and Tories seem to be queuing up to agree with him.
Have I wandered into some sort of hospital for the mentally infirm?!
David Cameron has poked himself and the whole of Britain in the eye with a pointed stick. Definitely a blinder!
Riots in England
I did predict rioting this summer in a previous post but I must admit that I didn’t think they would take the form that they have. I thought it would be like the riots in the early 1980s which were the result of the policies of that ghastly disgrace of a woman who went by the name of Margaret Thatcher.
Mind you I think that if you look back to those days when she was going about telling us all that there was no such thing as society then it’s quite clear that yet again we can lay the blame at her door. I’m making absolutely no excuse for the thugs and thieves who have been causing mayhem on the streets of various cities in England over the past few nights but a culture of greed and corruption has been nurtured over the past 30 years or so especially in the ‘institutions’ of banks, Parliament and the metropolitan police and youngsters can see that those who already have – get even more.
When we have people like David Cameron as our Prime Minister and Boris Johnson as the Mayor of London, and we all know how badly they behaved when they were young, then it’s difficult to listen to them condemning the behaviour of thugs when they themselves were thugs as youngsters. The only differences between Cameron et al is the fact that they were from wealthy families and when as members of the Bullingdon Club they trashed The Ritz and thieved from Fortnums, their parents were able to pay for the damage and for some reason wealthy people get off with it. They aren’t seen as thugs but just young men up to ‘high jinks’.
Almost the very first thing which Thatcher did when she got into power was to strengthen the police force and pay them more money. It quickly became clear that this was so that she would have them completely on her side when she came to tackle the miners and close all of the mines down. So when David Cameron announced that he was cutting the police force I was absolutely gobsmacked. He might call himself ‘son of Maggie’ but he didn’t learn much from her. It’s obvious that the police decided that they weren’t going to do much to stop the trouble on the streets. Why would they when they don’t feel that their jobs are safe? It was in their best interest to step back and look overwhelmed, in the hope that there would be an outcry about the lack of policing and Cameron would have to do yet another U turn and cancel the cuts to the police force.
There hasn’t been any trouble in Scotland and that’s probably because they don’t want to be seen as following in the footsteps of anyone in England. The same thing happened when English football so-called supporters were famous for being hooligans. There was never any trouble in Scotland because the Scottish football supporters liked to see themselves as being above all that nonsense – and they were. But the authorities in some countries have been advising people not to travel to the UK which is very annoying especially as the Edinburgh Festival has just begun.
It has been great to see the communities in England rallying round and clearing up and we should never forget that there are far more decent people than there are mindless morons around.
